Wild Horses on the Prairie: Pure Freedom to Color

What makes this picture so special is the sense of movement. Manes fly in the wind, legs stretch out at full gallop, and on the horizon hills wait, maybe even a lone cloud. Your child can color not just the horses themselves, but also discover the tall prairie grass, the wide sky, and little details like rocks or bushes along the way.

Coloring tip: Give each horse its own character

A nice trick when coloring horse herds is to give each animal its own coat color. That way, a single page automatically turns into a little story with several characters. A dun in warm beige, a black in deep brownish-black, and a pinto with cheeky white patches, and suddenly the herd is bursting with life.

For the prairie itself, warm earth tones work well, along with a rich yellow-green for the grass, plus a soft blue or orange for the sky, depending on whether the horses are out in the morning or evening. You can easily download the picture for free and print it out at home on A4 paper, nice and relaxed. Then all you need are some pencils, a cozy spot, and the little mustang gang can gallop off, at least on paper.
