A mountain lake that reflects the peaks in the water
What makes this picture so special is the double world it shows. Up above, the rugged peaks tower into the sky, and down in the lake they appear once more, just mirrored and a little wavy. Your children can discover how reflections work almost without noticing, while filling in the mountains, sky, trees along the shore, and the calm water surface with color. Some even end up using two different shades of blue, one for the sky and one for the water.
Tip: Think of top and bottom as a pair
A nice approach is to apply each color first to the mountains above, and then immediately repeat the mirrored spot in the lake in a slightly paler or softly blended shade. That way, the picture almost becomes a little memory game of colors. Gray and brown rocks above, soft gray-blue below, lush green for meadows and trees, and for the sky a bold blue with a few white cloud dabs works nicely.
