Sand Dunes to Color: Waves of Sand as Far as the Eye Can See
There's plenty to discover in this picture: little ripples in the sand shaped by the wind, the shift from light to darker dune crests, and an open sky that leaves lots of room for your own ideas. Maybe your child will add a glowing evening sun, or a few clouds drifting over the desert. There's no right or wrong here, just sand, light, and imagination.
Tip: Play with Light and Shadow
A great trick when coloring dunes is not to use the same color everywhere. The crests where the sun shines can glow in warm yellow or soft orange, while the valleys in between stay in muted brown or gentle red tones. This instantly creates real depth, almost like a genuine desert landscape. If you like, you can also press harder or softer with your colored pencils, which naturally creates soft gradients in the sand.
